A Neighborhood Built on Coal, Community & Comfort Food
Before Hudson was the GPS dot that led you to a perfect pappardelle and a crisp cocktail, it was something more: a historic neighborhood in Plains Township, PA, with roots that run deep into the heart of America’s industrial past.
Long before The Gallery opened its doors in the old Dominick’s Café, this land was alive with tradition, labor, and the echoes of generations past.
From Riverbank Settlement to Coal Town Powerhouse
Indigenous Roots in the Wyoming Valley
Hudson sits along the eastern banks of the Susquehanna River—once home to the Susquehannock and Delaware tribes who lived off the land long before the arrival of settlers.
The Anthracite Awakening
In the 18th century, settlers discovered anthracite—or “stone coal”—beneath the soil. Blacksmiths like Obadiah Gore (a real Wilkes-Barre name) figured out how to burn it hot enough for forges. That discovery would ignite an economic transformation.
The Delaware & Hudson Canal Company, formed in 1823, created a crucial transport system to get coal from the Lackawanna Valley to booming markets in New York. Out of that movement came the Hudson Coal Company, and with it, a new name for this hardworking neighborhood.
Hudson’s Boom, Bust, and Beautiful Resilience
Built for Miners, Sustained by Pride
As the coal industry exploded, patch towns like Hudson popped up to house the families who fueled America’s growth. Houses, churches, corner stores—they all grew around the mines. And when the coal stopped flowing after WWII, the town didn’t disappear.
The dust settled, but the pride remained. Today, Hudson is a quiet, close-knit community of homes—many built between the 1920s and 1950s—with the same blue-collar energy that shaped it.
And Then Came The Gallery
We chose Hudson for a reason.
We wanted to open our restaurant in a place that meant something. A place with real roots and real people. We brought fresh pasta, cocktails, and comfort back to the corner—and kept the spirit of Dominick’s alive in a new way.
Why We Love It Here:
Hard work, with a soft landing
A deep past, served with a fresh plate
Warm lights, full hearts, and cold margaritas on Thursday Night
So whether you’re from Hudson, passing through Plains Township, or heading to Mohegan Sun down the road—make a detour for dinner. Sit on our patio. Try the short rib ragout. And feel what it’s like to eat in a place with history under the floorboards and fresh herbs in the sauce.
